Introduce a tax on the excess profits of large corporations (e.g. on banks, gas companies)

Assessment Criteria
1
Do not support
1.5
Close loopholes that enable multinational tax avoidance
2
Introduce a superprofits tax and close loopholes that enable multinational tax avoidance
Evidence

Type: Statement

Summary: Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia responded to our survey as being supportive of closing loopholes that enable multinational tax avoidance, stating: “The only problem with super-profit taxes is that corporations will use accounting methods to artificially present a lower taxable income so they don't pay them (which also adds to inefficiencies). As far as the mining and other extractive industries goes, we would prefer an increase in royalty payments on the actual units taken from the country forever, be that minerals, or water wastefully used, timber extracted and so on. It is not really our concern if the company makes a profit or a loss doing that extraction as long as they have paid proper substantial compensation to traditional owners and the community in general for the damage and loss caused. Likewise in the services industries we would rather see corporations forced to deliver improved wages and conditions to their employees. Once again if they make a profit or loss doing that is, in a sense, irrelevant to the community”.

Support a significant reduction of individuals employed by the public service

Assessment Criteria
1
Do not support
2
Support a significant reduction of individuals employed by the public service
Evidence

Type: Statement

Summary: Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia responded to our survey as being unsupportive of cutting public service jobs, stating: “Cutting the public service will only mean that more money is spent on external consultants in the big accounting firms; KPMG, PWC, Deloitte etc. This has been proved to be more expensive in only the previous Coalition government so for it to be proposed seriously again is outrageous. Furthermore, PWC was found to be corrupt and actually treasonous in its selling of ways to avoid Australian tax changes to its overseas clients using information gained from its contract with the Australian government. The fact these facts are not pointed out by the media in discussions about the size of the public service is an indictment of our compromised and ineffective our media has become. While public servants are nowhere near as disadvantaged as Blakfullas, we know a crude dog whistle when we see one”.

Assessment Criteria

1.5

2
Support phasing out negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts
Evidence

Type: Statement

Summary: Indigenous - Aboriginal Party of Australia responded to our survey as being unsupportive of phasing out negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts, stating: “The IAPA does not support earned income being taxed more heavily than speculative income. That is ridiculous, so it is obvious that capital gain should be taxed at the same rate or higher than earned income. However it is common for losses in one of your income streams to be averaged out with profits in an another area. For instance a artist building up a creative business while also working for wages for someone else. So once again careful modelling would have to be undertaken to avoid unintended consequences. The IAPA cares about real people in private rentals, and we do not want their rents to increase, even in the short term to satisfy an ideological position”.
