1-2 hours/week (now - September), increasing to 3-4 hours/week (October - November). Must be available for the 6 weeks leading into election day (17th October - 28th November 2026)
Build a Ballot is a free, non-partisan tool that helps Australians look beyond political branding, to understand where candidates stand on policies and make informed decisions at the ballot box.
Volunteers played a huge role in helping almost 600,000 Australians discover Build a Ballot and get election-ready during the 2025 federal election.
For the upcoming Victorian election, we're expanding our volunteer program so we can go bigger; with volunteer teams operating across the state, each led by team leaders who coordinate their local group.
As Volunteer Coordinator, you’ll sit across all of it — managing team leaders, keeping the program on track, and making sure volunteers feel supported from orientation through to election day. This is a role for someone with a good understanding of democracy and elections, with a passion to help people make an informed vote!
Recruiting – help us spread the word about volunteer and team leader opportunities in the lead-up to the election
Onboarding – guide new volunteers through the volunteer portal and onboarding process, including co-running an orientation session (with us), to make sure everyone understands the program and guidelines before they get started
Be a central point of contact – provide day-to-day support for team leaders through regular check-ins, and set up and manage group chats to keep teams connected and motivated
Logistics – keep the volunteer database up to date, support the mailing out of marketing materials, and support teams to plan and deliver local activations
Feedback and recognition – create an environment where volunteers feel seen, valued, and appreciated throughout the campaign
Keep us in the loop – flag emerging issues or patterns to us early, and handball to us when things get tricky
Send us a short cover letter and CV (no more than a page) telling us a bit about yourself, why this role interests you, and any relevant experience you'd bring, to hello@buildaballot.org.au.
We’d love to hear from people with experience volunteering in elections, community organising, or running programs with lots of moving parts — but it’s not a requirement. What matters most is that you care about democracy and want to connect voters with tools that make participation easier.
