Have a question that hasn't been answered below? Submit a question here.
First, you’ll answer a short series of questions about the big issues impacting you this election — think housing, the cost of energy bills and access to healthcare. Based on your results, Build a Ballot calculates a ‘match level’ with the candidates in your electorate.
It’s pretty simple: if you strongly support a policy and a candidate does too, that’s 1 match point! The overall ‘match level’ is just a percentage of all the potential ‘match points’ included in the questionnaire.
You can view your match level with candidates in your electorate, see how they’re approaching key issues and add your own notes based on any other issues that matter to you. You can then drag candidates into your ‘voting plan’ — putting them in the order of your preference. Importantly, this doesn’t have to reflect your ‘match levels’ — you get to decide your own preferences!
Once you’ve built your ballot for the lower and upper house, you can screenshot or email your ballot to yourself, ready to take to the ballot box on election day.
No! The recommendations you receive through the tool are based on how you fill out the questionnaire. If you don’t support a policy and a candidate also doesn’t support it? That’s still 1 match point!
As long as you head to the ballot box informed, we don’t mind how you end up voting!
Firstly, you don’t need to provide any identifiable, personal information to use Build a Ballot. You will have the option to add an email address to send your ballot to yourself, but you can always take a screenshot if you prefer.
Personal information we collect (email, postcode and linked political opinions) is only used to tailor voting recommendations specific to your electoral district and to send your ballot. Your personal information will not be shared, sold, or disclosed to any third parties except as required by law.
We will be sharing summarised, de-identified findings about which issues are most important to the voters that use Build a Ballot. We think it’s important to use this information to remind politicians about the issues and policies that we care about most. Only aggregated findings - and no personal information - will be shared.
Build a Ballot is a project by Project Planet Inc. We’re a small charity focused on helping Australians better understand climate change, and find themselves in the solutions.
You might be wondering: What does Build a Ballot have to do with climate?
Well, I’m so glad you asked! We know Australians care deeply about issues like climate change and the energy transition, but translating that concern into informed voting decisions isn’t always easy. We also know that there is a lot of dis- and mis-information out there when it comes to the energy transition.
We created Build a Ballot to help voters cut through the noise and understand where parties and candidates stand on the issues that matter most to them, so they can make their decision based on facts, rather than spin. And, because we know that climate is just one of many issues impacting Aussies, we worked with some trusted partners to ensure the tool is useful to you even if climate isn’t your top priority.
Build a Ballot has been generously supported by hundreds of Australians who care about helping voters access non-partisan, reliable information. We’re not backed by big corporations with hidden agendas. And we don’t take money from any political parties, candidates or associated campaign groups.
Alongside our donors, Build a Ballot has been made possible by an incredible team of volunteers who have generously given their time and expertise.
If you’d like to support the work we do, you can donate here!
Everyone can help to put Build a Ballot in the hands, feeds and group chats of Australians across the country. You can head to our campaign page to discover ways you can support Build a Ballot.
If you can, consider donating. We're a small (mostly volunteer) team so every dollar helps!
If you're a candidate or party, you can get in touch by emailing tool@buildaballot.org.au.
We're working to email all candidates and parties but if we've missed you, please reach out and we'll send across a questionnaire to ensure Build a Ballot accurately reflects your policies and positions.
We choose issues by identifying the major challenges impacting Australians — such as housing, cost of living and climate change — that consistently rank as top concerns for voters and are supported by strong evidence as real, material issues. We prioritise issues with significant intergenerational impacts and ensure they fall within the responsibilities of the level of government being considered.
We’re not backed by big corporations with hidden agendas. Build a Ballot is literally powered by thousands of everyday Australians — with a little help from our mates at Heaps Normal — who want what we want: a democracy that actually works for people and the planet.
If you’re in a position to chip in, a recurring donation is the most powerful way to help us bring Build a Ballot to future elections.
Build a Ballot launches a few weeks before every State and Federal election. Fill out the form, and we’ll let you know when the tool is live.

Thank you for your hard work, Build a Ballot was so easy to use, both online and at the booth. My children in their early 20’s feel very despondent about the future but your efforts to make the future seem a little brighter for their generation is giving them a little more power.
I used the Build a Ballot website before voting yesterday and I was so glad I did! I was pretty overwhelmed by the massive white ballot and all the parties, so I whipped out my guide that I had made earlier and just copied the numbers down, so easy!
Thank you so much! I was able to help so many people, younger and older, make informed voting decisions through your site.
It’s such a great tool, very very helpful for political overwhelm and last minute stress voters who leave it til the last minute (which is usually me but not this year)
I loved Build a Ballot, so good and accessible too (especially for those of us with hidden disabilities) - took a lot of work out of the research and let me target my energy.
I’m 62 and have never found a way to vote that aligned so well with my values!! Thank you so much.
I shared your brilliance with all my green Z babies and their mates to help educate them in this first time at the booths, and they made me so proud! So careful and considered they were with their vote. We are in good hands for the future.
This process helped me so much!!! I’ve never fully understood the voting system or how to work out my preferences correctly in alignment with my values. It felt so empowering.
So impressed with what you’ve created. I was able to have great conversations with my family and help them really see who they aligned with!
While handing out how to vote cards in regional NSW, I saw an older couple with their printed out Build a Ballot, stapled A4 pages and everything! So cool to see!
Build a Ballot just helped one of my friends overcome their voting anxiety and get to the polls 1 hour before they closed.
Thank you so much for this tool! It makes voting by POLICY so easy!
I’ve never felt so informed before an election and it was an incredible feeling! I’m so excited to see what comes next and just as excited to keep recommending you to everyone I know.
Build a Ballot is the best thing about this election! Made it SO EASY for my two young adult kids to plan their vote, and generated great political chat in our house.
Build a Ballot is a game changer. I was in and out of that pre-polling booth in 5 minutes. It definitely took away all the overwhelm especially with that senate paper.
It was so satisfying attending my pre-polling centre and saying to all the parties handing out pamphlets “I already know how I am voting.” I felt a new sense of pride knowing I had done my research.
I did an early vote today and it was so much less overwhelming going into the chaos of the polling place knowing I had an ordered voting plan.
I just early voted. Used your site. So amazing and easy to use! I’ve discovered parties that align to my values. I’m 48 and I finally understand how my vote counts.
I linked my 23 year old daughter up with BaB last week after she said “Mum can’t I just vote for who you vote for.” She ended up being so pleased that your platform took out the guesswork, and now she’s shared with her mates.
Just completed Build a Ballot with my 18 and 20 year old sons, it’s an exceptional tool! Lots of great conversations were had! off to family pre-poll, no wasted votes in this house!
I normally feel really dumb come election time so I laugh off not knowing who I’m voting for. I’m grateful for your tool as its really shown me my values and I can have a say in who I vote for. It’s helped me take back my power in the election.
I just used my Build a Ballot to vote early and it made it so easy. I think the easiest polling experience I have ever had. Thank you.
THANK YOU! I voted early yesterday and went in armed with my Build a Ballot responses. You’ve built such a useful tool, which helps everyone from first time voters to busy Millennials and GenZ’s.
OMG! Thank you so much, this was so so useful! I consider myself someone who is politically engaged and aware but at the last election I was so overwhelmed by the amount of minor parties. I experience anxiety and being able to to build a ballot in a calm and informed environment made me feel very confident and secure.
Oh my god, you guys have done a spectacular job. Build a Ballot is such an amazing tool.
